LAST DAY IN BRUGES

A couple more little corners to explore.  The first was to tackle the 366 steps to the top of the Belfry in the Markt on what was an unusually clear and bright day - perfect to get those views from the top!  It was so worth the climb and rather fun negotiating one's way up the tight spiral staircase especially the shuffles when meeting others going in the opposite direction!  We were lucky enough to be in the bell tower on the hour for the added bonus of watching the huge brass round cylinder of the carillon in action.

We found Michelangelo's Madonna and Child  in the Church of our Lady - the only one of his works to leave Italy in his lifetime.   So worth seeking out.  Though much smaller and simpler than the Pieta in St Peter's, Rome, it truly is a remarkable work of art - and we couldn't help but stand a while simply to enjoy its extraordinary beauty.

Under blue skies we enjoyed a saunter around the daffodil strewn  gardens of the Beguinage - a place of peace and silence in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city.

Then it was lunch - delicious Flemish beef stew before a last meander through Bruges -

and the purchase of some Bruges lace curtains to grace our motor home - and such a pretty tablecloth I simply couldn't resist!
